30 Days to Marathon...

and I can't make it 6 miles without my knee hurting. So it seems I might need to make a second trip to Texas. I'll keep running but it doesn't look promising. It looks like I can defer my entry until next year for $40 but who knows if I'll be able to go back then, so probably won't do that. Or I can officially switch to the half-marathon, but that costs $10 and no refund for the registration difference so forget that.

The course closes 7 hours after race start so I would need to go at an average pace of 3.75 miles per hour to finish. I might be able to run a few miles and then walk at a 3-4 mph pace and keep my knee issues at bay. That will seem painfully slow, but I might be able to finish the full 26.2 that way.

It sounds like the knee is doing better. 6 miles is more than 2.

What, if anything, are you doing to rehab the knee?

For injury prevention, you might look into doing hip adductor/abductor strengthening exercises and also assisted single-legged squats (if your knee can tolerate it). They're difficult at first, but keep doing them. The benefit is bullet-proof legs.

I've been doing some stretching and massaging, but not much strength training work. I need to get a routine set up. I'll start tomorrow.

I never got a foam roller but I use a rolling bin (for baking) down the side of my leg and that seems to work just fine.

Strengthen up the hips and quads.

A rolling pin is a lot harder than a foam roller. I assume you're not lying down on it but using your hands to roll out the tissue? Laying down on a rolling pin would be awfully painful. The first time you use a foam roller, it's awfully painful. A foam roller is a good investment. I've got access to one at the gym, so I don't really see a need to have one for home-use, as well. That's one reason why I pay $20/month for a gym membership.
