Less than 2 weeks to go. Any tips on tapering? I did a strenuous hike Saturday and 12 miles today. I hope to do a 50 mile bike ride next Saturday in addition to following my run schedule. I don't want to over do it. Where does x-training fit into the taper? What do you think about running the day before the race?

reduce mileage 10 to 20 percent during each of the final two weeks but not intensity.
there's an excellent article in November's issue of Runner's World about the proper way to taper.
Don't believe him, Dan. That article is alright but I think tapering should be more unique to each individual. Last year was I feeling kind of beat up after my peak run of 22 miles. Therefore, I reduced both mileage and intensity for the 3 weeks leading up to the marathon. On race day I felt so refreshed! And confident because I knew that I had done the training, next the healing, and finally the racing. This year I feel less beat up so I have been reducing mileage but not intensity. You should do what feels right. Trust in your training and not some Runner's World article with a ridiculous mathematical formula.
Oh yeah, and to answer your questions about cross-training and running the day before. I would count cross-training the same as running and you might want to take it easy during the next 2 weeks. As for running the day before the race...sounds like a great idea (if you want to bonk around mile 20!!)
