21ish miles

Dan and I did our long runs yesterday of about 21 miles at Mansfield Hollow State Park. I'm thinking it might have been a bit more, maybe 22. We came in under 3 hours. I felt strong to the finish. The GU Energy Gel (which will be provided at the marathon at mile 18 and on demand thereafter) is definitely key. It gave me an added boost for miles 7-14 and then another, which didn't kick in until about mile 16 or 17, when I started feeling the wall, for miles 14 through the finish.

I'm thinking I might try to hang with the 8-minute pack or maybe better on marathon day.

It was a pleasure to meet Em, Diego and Nina. Thanks for all the great post-run food! I hope that we can do this more often.

Dan, thanks for your hospitality and, more important, feeding me, and I apologize for eating you out of house and home, or if I did. I bought a bundle of Borecole last night. Now what?

Until next time...

Nice job, Ryan. My goal for the marathon is 8 min pace. I am planning to find the 3:30 pacer and to try to stay with that group. You should join us!

1.) I was amazed with Ryan's pace. He ran as fast as a gazelle and strong as a bulldog.

2.) 8 Min pace would be great. I'm not sure if I should go for that or not, but if you both do, I might have to.

3.) Nothing beats a whole foods plant based diet. Enjoy your kale.

4.) What's the story with the GU only being available at mile 18 and after? Geoff, did you carry your own stuff last year? Were they handing stuff out before the race or should we bring our own?

5.) I also agree that running with friends and eating after is a great time. We should try to do it again after the marathon.

Thanks, Geoff and Dan. I really like these nicknames. Pacing is going to be tricky. In any event, I'm gonna give it my all. Besides, I didn't run 391 miles in this buildup for nothing. This is what we train for...

Dan, I just checked out the Hartford Marathon website and it does appear that GU is only available from mile 18 on. However, they said that last year and yet GU was available at EVERY station. But because I thought that it was only going to be after 18 miles, I carried 3 packs that I brought from home. I didn't really need too...they were constantly trying to push that stuff on us. Anyhow, I have been training by carrying 2 packs in my side pocket on all my long runs so I will probably do that on race day. It gives me options.
