Returning to that pesky shoe problem

Right. So, I had scheduled a 3.5 mile tempo run this morning, but when I woke up, I was still sore from Tuesday's run. Not good. Admitedly, I've known for far to long that my running shoes were on the outs, but time and finances had kept me from replacing them. I have plans to go running shoe shopping (which, for a female, is an entirely different project than the classic "shoe shopping") this weekend, but I decided after a mile loop on the trail that I would bail on the tempo run for now. My arches are sore and both IT Bands are tight. Blah. Usually, I would probably say "screw it" and run through it (it's only a couple more days on bad shoes), but my triathlon is in 10 days and the last thing I need is to do a run that's going to result in an injury that will sideline me.

Since you mentioned finances and I am a frugal SOB, I thought I'd post my plan to never spend more than $50 on a good pair of shoes. I've had good luck finding top quality shoes for $45-55 on Sierra Trading Post(though shipping tends to be slow)and I know Ryan had some luck tracking down an older model of his favorite shoe for less than $50 at Sports Authority. Anybody else have suggestions for sources of good cheap running stuff?

Other than ST Post, I can't think of any other bargain sites. Paragon Sports, no matter what the product is, seems to undercut all its online competitors on price.

I usually get my running shoes (and other running gear) from Road Runner Sports. They occasionally have some good deals. However, you can sign up to be a VIP member and then you get 10% of everything, free shipping, and you can wear test your shoes for 1 week before deciding whether or not to keep them. It works well for my wife and I because we each typically go through 3 or more pairs of shoes each year.

I don't know if I agree with always trying to bargain hunt for running shoes. They are THE most important piece of running equipment. And for a relatively inexpensive sport, I think good shoes are a small sacrafice.
