Too Greedy or Not?

So here's an issue I hope everyone can comment on (I've already been asking co-workers and family members every day since it happened). This past Saturday I participated in a race event that consisted of multiple races back-to-back (2 miles or 5 miles). Two runners (one man and one woman) that were obviously far better than anyone else there (and maybe in all of NW Connecticut) officially entered both races and finished first and second overall in each (crushing the nearest runners by a great distance) and taking home all the trophies. My question is, do any of you feel that this is poor etiquette? Or do you think that every runner has the right to race in any race that is open to the public? I felt like maybe they should have run in one officially and done the other one unofficially. What do you guys think?

I say more power to them. Maybe that will attract some better runners to the field next year. Was there prize money on the line?

How did you and Jeremy do???

No, there was not any prize money, only nifty tiles and plates (much like the one you won last year).

Jeremy and I both failed to meet our time goals and we were both about over 40 seconds slower than last year. I blame it on the mustaches! Too much wind resistance. Still I managed to finish 10th and he was 33rd out of 261. Not too shabby. The complete results and pictures of both of us can be found on the Bristol Shamrock Run and Walk website.

I saw that Marc blew away all competition in both races. Not only was I surprised to see the huge gap between his times and the second place times, I was surprised to see that he did both races. I never saw that before. Personally, I don't have a problem with it, because I'm not competing with the best runners in any races, but maybe I'd be singing a different tune if I were. Good post, Geoff.

I'm with Dan on this one. "More power to them." If they have the skills to win, I have no problem with that. Sure, they have natural talent, but I'm sure a lot of training and hard work went into their wins as well. They won't be in every race, so the second place person can have his/her "day in the sun" when that day's winners aren't there.
