Solid marathon performances in Virginia Beach

Lippincott ran a 3:54 and Britton ran a 3:13 on a cold, windy day in Virginia Beach yesterday. Solid debut marathon for Lippincott. Britton tops marathon PR by 16 minutes. Congrats!

Ryan, thanks for coming to the race and supporting us. I'm happy with my performance as my goal was 3:15, though 3:10 was in the back of my mind, especially for the first 19 miles as I was keeping pace with the 3:10 pacer, and then again around mile 23 when some guy I was running with said "come on, 3:10, we got this." Alas, I did not have it! Those last 6 miles were painful and I don't think I could have pushed it any harder (as I'm sure the pics will show), so I feel good about that. I posted my splits in my training log. Slow decline to 8 min pace the last 6-7 miles. They were more painful than I remember the final miles of Hartford. I'm still not sure if I started out too aggressive running with the 3:10 pack, but with the strong wind I made a decision to stay with them rather than fight the wind solo. I think it was a good choice, but I wonder if I would have had more left in the end had I held off a bit.

The course was nice, and flat (as a pancake) except for one bridge we went over a couple times. Strong head winds, especially on the boardwalk heading north. My favorite part was running through the military barracks and having the guys in uniform cheering us on, doing push-ups, and chanting. Second favorite was the north part of the course running through the First Landing State park and along the mouth of the Chesapeake.

Not much selection for post race food (bananas, beef stew, a granola bar, and beer). The band was good though. I think Hartford's crowds and post race event blew VA Beach away, but the VA Beach course was definitely better.

You're welcome. It was a pleasure. Thanks for giving us a more efficient showerhead.
